No matter what it is, when we set out to to try something new, obstacles tend to get in the way. Some of them are reasonable barriers (think, you want to be a surgeon and haven’t gone to medical school) and some of them are just mental roadblocks that we can easily tackle and move forward. Luckily, if you’re interested in fitness writing, most of your barriers are likely the latter. You might be thinking any of the following:
‘I don’t have any published clips.’
‘I don’t know how to write.’
‘I don’t know where to start.’
‘I don’t know exactly what I would write about.’
‘I don’t know who to contact.’
and the one of the most popular concerns, ‘I don’t have a journalism degree.’ (Read my post all about why you don’t need a journalism degree HERE.)
Lucky for you, none of these have to stop you from fitness writing! For today, I’ll give you a simple reason or way you can overcome each of these common obstacles:
‘I don’t have any published clips.’ Offer to write for free or start a blog. ‘I don’t know how to write.’ If you can talk, you can write. ‘I don’t know where to start.’ Start with brainstorming ideas (Click here for my post on where you can get topic ideas.) ‘I don’t know exactly what I would write about.’ Same as above! ‘I don’t know who to contact.’ Sometimes, even the most seasoned writers aren’t sure who to contact. Check editor titles for ‘fitness,’ ‘wellness’ or ‘health’ and look for ‘digital’ or ‘web’ in their title if you aim to write online.
