You want to be a fitness writer but you have no idea where to start. First of all, you are not alone. Secondly, if you have an interest, you’re likely qualified. Fitness writers come from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels and not all of them even have journalism or writing-related degrees. If you were worried about that, read my 6 Reasons you Don’t Need a Journalism Degree to be a Fitness Writer. Now, back to where to start.
Read, read, read!
Start by reading everything you can get your
hands eyes on that relates to fitness, especially the magazines, sites and blogs where you’d love to see your byline (your byline is ‘by (insert your name here)’).
Seriously, that is the best place to start. Why?
- You’ll be amazed how quickly you come up with ideas for your own future articles. One article can trigger you to think of several spin-off topic ideas or different angles of the exact same topic.
- You’ll get familiar with the writing style of that publication or site, how often they post or print and what fits well with their content.
- Last, it will keep your fitness knowledge up-to-date.
